Patience
I listened to this song twice on the way to work today. The breakdown - I had to listen to that breakdown. I just feel like the whole piece is steering us towards the breakdown from the beginning. No argument that the music that leads up to that point is nothing less that perfect. I mean who knew that Slash could be so elequent with an acoustic guitar? The restraint and phrasing he employs on this song is jsut the kind of thing I wish I could do on a guitar. But it’s during the breakdown where it all turns loose, and nothing complex - the message is simple, brutal and clear. It’s here that Axl actually says what he’s been trying to say all along. It’s not about love or understanding or whatever; it’s need. No common prayer can come close to the effect that the litany for patience and need that runs over those climbing chords has on me.
